San Marcos Island, a theme and amusement park, was created by the Government of the State of Aguascalientes fifteen years ago for regional tourism. This complex has remained an isolated infrastructure with specific use during holiday seasons, being underutilized for the rest of the year.
The present intervention focuses on generating urban life in the existing park throughout the year through the following strategies: Integrating, Redesigning and Connecting.
Integrating the Island into the central area of the city through a linear park and a network of recreational bike paths, creating a permanent tourist/urban promenade.
Redesigning the existing space for everyday public use, including recreational, playful, and sports activities around a landscape proposal that invites strolling and enjoyment.
The proposed new uses are: Vertical Parking, Hotel, Multi-Sports Hub aimed at attracting national and international sports events, Regional Gastronomic Center, Temporary Sports Courts, Monumental Access Landmark, Medium and Large Stalls Area, Tailgate Kitchen, New Lotting of Permanent Commercial Stalls, Children's Playground, Pet Area and a new Medium Events Canopy.
Connecting with the urban fabric and enabling new access points to the neighboring communities (which are currently disconnected from the island and lack recreational public space).
Daniel Alcalá Architects and STVX created a synergy with TEUA and Dr. Miguel Sahagún to conduct the urban and psychosocial studies that underpin the ambitious proposal.
For the realization of this project, a significant site analysis was required. The area and the surrounding territory were scanned with a drone, and photogrammetry was processed to obtain 3D contour lines, resulting in a more accurate urban proposal and visual representation.
